Political analyst, Mr Marcus Ijioma has described Senator Dino Melaye‘s comment on Peter Obi as irrelevant.
Melaye had on Sunday, July 31 – during the Public declaration for Atiku and induction ceremony by the Diamond Ladies in Politics in Abuja, said the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar discovered Peter Obi, the standard flag bearer of Labour Party.
“Obi is a fantastic Nigerian but he was not known nationally until Atiku identified him. Atiku is a talent hunter. Everyone who was a reformer in this country between 1999 to date was a discovery of Atiku,” Melaye said while speaking at the event.
Responding to the comment made by the PDP chieftain, Marcus Ijioma, a political analyst, said Dino Melaye was completely wrong by underestimating a former Governor.
According to him, Dino himself was unpopular until he started doing comedy skits.
“Dino Melaye was not known nationally untill he started doing comedy skits. Dancing on social media. Started trending on social media. Dino’s popularity was amplified by his comic skits and before we know what’s happening, he cashed on to the popularity of Buhari and ran for Senate in 2015,” Mr Ijioma said when he appeared on Atlantic Television Network, ATN.
“He (Dino Melaye) is completely wrong to underestimate a former governor of a state. There’s no former governor in Nigeria today you will say is unpopular or is not known because you’re supporting another candidate.”
“My concern is, it looks like there is something special about Peter Obi like Dino himself acknowledged. If not, why APC and PDP not facing each other? Why are they facing Labour? If Labour Party and Peter Obi are only on Social media, can’t they just let them be?
“Why do they formed the basis of conversation in PDP or APC? We want to hear one mention of Kwankwaso, nobody is telling us about Sowore. There are about 16 presidential candidates, but we practically hear about three of them and here is Dino trying to playing a mind game by narrowing it down to two,” Ijioma said.
He added that despite Atiku’s popularity and being the then Vice President when he ran for office of president in 2007, he couldn’t pull the votes he pulled in 2019 when he ran on a same ticket with Peter Obi.
