The Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has celebrated Nigerian/American doctor, Onyema Ogbuagu for excelling in his profession which has led him to be among the team that discovered coronavirus vaccine.

Recall that a vaccine has been approved by the United States of American, FDA, to cure COVID-19. Among the team that found the vaccine is Dr. Onyema Ogbuagu.

Celebrating Ogbuagu, the Abia Governor, in a series of tweets stated that Ogbuagu, whose father is from Abia State has made the state proud.

According to him, Dr. Onyema a son Prof. Chibuzo Ogbuagu who himself was a former Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), is a blessing to the people of Abia and Nigeria in general.

Ikpeazu said;

“Dr Onyema Ogbuagu, the Abia-born Nigerian is one of the leading lights in the newly found globally celebrated @pfizer vaccine against COVID-19.

“He’s one of many Abians who keep making us proud as a people, & reinforcing my Government’s belief in the inimitable ingenuity, capacity and competence of our people to sacrificially serve humanity, save her from all that which ravages her and produce goods and services that make life more comfortable and convenient to live.

“I am therefore not surprised that this twin son of Prof Chibuzo Ogbuagu who himself was a former Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) and a former Secretary to Abia State Government (SSG), was among those who led the team that discovered the now celebrated COVID-19 vaccine which will certainly save millions of lives especially now that a second wave of the disease is already ravaging parts of the world.

“Dr Onyema Ogbuagu is the Yale principal investigator on multiple investigational therapeutic & preventative clinical trials for COVID-19 including remdesivir (now FDA approved), leronlimab & remdesivir & tocilizumab combination therapy as well as the Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine trial.

“As Abians, Ndigbo, & Nigerians in general, we celebrate this our son, an Associate Professor of Medicine, in the clinician-educator track and Director of the HIV Clinical Trials program of the Yale AIDS Program, Section of Infectious Diseases of the Yale School of Medicine.

“On our part as a Governmet, we shall continue to not only celebrate such rare feats achieved by our people everywhere to serve as motivation for others to embrace dedication & thrive in whatever lawful field of endeavour they choose in life, we shall also continue to create & improve upon the environment for learning & entrepreneurship to thrive in the State & donate to the world more men & women unfazed, unbowed & undaunted by whatever challenges and tasks are brought before them for solutions; Abians with the can-do & persevering spirit dedicated to the making of a better world for all.

Dr. Onyema Speaks On The Pfizer Vaccine.

Dispelling the rumours about the approved cure for COVID-19, Dr. Ogbuagu has said the vaccine result are real.

He noted that the vaccine was not  delayed to hurt or help any politician, contrary to what the US President, Donald Trump has claimed.

Dr. Ogbuagu took to his twitter page to straight the record straight.

Let's dispel some rumors especially because misinformation about COVID-19 may and can cost lives. Enough already!

1. Vaccine efficacy results are real. They were not delayed to hurt or help any politician
2. The Pfizer vaccine doesnt contain the SARS CoV-2 virus or parts of it!

He said;

“Let’s dispel some rumors especially because misinformation about COVID-19 may and can cost lives. Enough already!

1. Vaccine efficacy results are real. They were not delayed to hurt or help any politician
2. The Pfizer vaccine doesnt contain the SARS CoV-2 virus or parts of it!

3. No nefarious or sinister plan to inject people with a labeling code. The mRNA vaccine is not integrated into recipients genome.
4. No fetal tissue is used for the mRNA vaccine.
5. And No!…researchers such as myself are not part of any conspiracies.

We just want to apply science to improve patient outcomes and even better, to prevent disease.

We can only work our way out of this pandemic through effective vaccines especially because it is difficult to achieve optimal mask wearing and physical distancing to end the pandemic.

Think of how vaccines have made deadly diseases either go away (small pox) or become relatively rare (such as measles).

When the “COVID” vaccine becomes available, lets roll up our sleeves and lets end this thing!

Another challenge would be equitable distribution of vaccines high vs. low/middle income countries, and even in developed nations, to ensure that vulnerable and underserved populations, disproportionally affected by the pandemic are proportionally reached!

Now is time for strategic distribution plans at global, national and community level.
