Former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s government may shutdown social media completely in Nigeria.

Fani-Kayode stated this while reacting to the recent ban on Twitter usage in Nigeria, a directive by the Federal Ministry of Information on Friday.

In a Twitter post on Saturday, the former minister said a reliable source told him that President Buhari’s intention is to ban all social media platforms in the country.

“I have been reliably informed that it is the intention of the FG to eventually close down social media completely in Nigeria. Until that time comes they intend to make it a criminal offence to use social media without NBC approval or registration.

“Nigeria is now a police state!

Abacityblog.com reports that days after Buhari’s genocidal tweets, a threat against the people of Southeast region, was removed from twitter, he directed for the ban of twitter.

Checks on Saturday morning showed that telecommunications in Nigeria has restricted users from accessing the micro-blogging platform. However, the restriction does not stop Nigerian twitter users as many has resorted to the use of Virtual Private Network (VPN).

VPN TRENDS

On twitter platform, hashtags such as ‘Na VPN and #Twitterban ‘Thank God for VPN‘ has been topping the trend charts.

Below is reactions from Nigerians who bypassed the restriction through VPN.
