Dermal fillers or injectable dermal fillers are substances similar to gel, which are injected under the skin, for improving facial contours, softening wrinkles, smoothening lines and restoring volume.

In the last few years, dermal filler injections have become very popular due to the fact that this offer aesthetic, rejuvenating and dramatic improvements which earlier was only achievable via surgery.

Also, dermal fillers are less expensive than surgical methods and the recovery time is much faster. The results from these types of fillers are short-term but the most advanced fillers that have come into the market now can offer results lasting for a couple of years.

Hyaluronic Acid

These are among the most popular type of dermal fillers. The body produces hyaluronic acid naturally. This acid can be found in maximum concentrations in the eye sockets, within the joints and in the skin. This kind of acid can offer flexibility and elasticity to the skin, retain collagen and increase moisture.

These dermal filler injections are able to restore the youthful appearance of skin, by filling out skin folds and wrinkles. According to studies, it has been found that repeatedly injecting hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can boost collagen production in the body – leading to additional support and firmness. The duration of this kind of dermal filler varies according to the product and the results can last from anywhere between a few months to 12 years.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite

This is another substance that occurs naturally, and is present in the bones. This is a compound similar to mineral, which is thicker in form as compared to hyaluronic acid fillers. It is important to note that Calcium hydroxyapatite is the heaviest dermal filler.

The Board of Cosmetic Surgery has reported that calcium hydroxyapatite helps boost production of collagen naturally in the skin. It is generally used for the elimination of wrinkles and deeper lines. The results from this dermal filler injections can last for one year or more in most patients.

Poly-L-lactic Acid

This is a biocompatible synthetic substance which can be safely used in the body. It is biodegradable. Prior to being used as dermal filler, it was implemented in dissolvable stitches and other medical devices for a long time.

These dermal fillers are categorized as collagen stimulators, on the basis of their action mechanism. These can smooth wrinkles and fine lines by aiding in rebuilding of natural collagen in the skin.

Some days after treatment, the filler itself gets dissolved into the skin. Primarily, this dermal filler injections are utilized for treating deeper wrinkles in the face and the results can persist for over 2 years.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

This is a biocompatible synthetic substance which has been used for a long time in long-lasting surgical implants. When Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is used as dermal filler, it becomes a tiny ball or microsphere – which remains under the skin and offers continual support. These types of fillers also have collagen, which can offer extra firmness and structure.

Fillers of these types are used most commonly for the treatment of:

  • Furrows
  • Folds and
  • Medium to deep wrinkles

These are especially useful for treating nasolabial folds. These can be used also for filling out pitted scars and for making thin lips look fuller. But there is a drawback of these kinds of fillers, given that there is a need for multiple injections for creating volume and the entire outcome can take as long as three months to show up.

You can easily find out that the market abounds in various kinds of dermal filler injections. Each Filler is formulated uniquely to have a specific injection depth density and texture, which indicates that some types of fillers are more suitable for specific purposes.
