Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, representing Bende Federal Constituency, has received a standing ovation from his colleagues after reading out a bill for the amendment of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
Kalu, in the motion sponsored by him, urged the national assembly to adhere to the bill and grant the NMA the sole authority to grant approvals and licenses for the establishments of meteorological stations across the nation.
It should be recalled that NMA or NIMET Provide weather forecasts and reports for safe operation of flights. NiMet has also been mandated by law to provide weather and climate information, advisories and services to all its stakeholders. This is to enable stakeholders in these sectors such as agriculture, transportation, tourism, water resources management, health, environment, communication, budget and planning etc.
Frowning that NMA isn’t living up to standards according to the world’s standard expectation, by their forecast, Hon. Kalu wants the agency to be given authority to issue licenses to the private sector to enable more stations established and by which, it will provide jobs.
The bill, which was read out for the first time received a rousing acceptance from other Hon. members as all supported the motion by shouting “Aye”.
