Agwu was Speaker of the state House of Assembly between 2003 to 2007.
In 2018, Hon. Agwu, reportedly dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Announcing his defection, the publicity secretary of APC in Abia, Comrade Benedict Godson, explained that the former speaker had registered in his ward(Ozu Abam) in Arochukwu local government area, which qualified him as a member of APC in Abia state.
