The proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria, has kept to their word today as they match in mass the streets of Abuja to observe Ashura procession today.
The Ashura procession, also called the Day of Ashura, is the tenth day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.
It is observed annually by Shi’ite Muslims worldwide to commemorate the death of Husayn ibn Ali in the Battle of Karbala in Iraq.
ABACITYBLOG recall that the Nigeria Police Force had also dared the group to march and see what they (the police) would do.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, ordered the arrest of all identified Shi’ite leaders across the country.
Ignoring the order, the group observed the Procession today in the streets of Abuja.
The secretary of the group’s academic forum, Abdullahi Musa, told PREMIUM TIMES that there were shootings in various states where the protests held.
“We held the protest in Abuja and it has ended peacefully because the police did not meet us before it ended. But in Kaduna I understand that three people were killed when security tried to stop our members,” he said.
“There were also shootings in Lela, Sokoto state, Azare in Bauchi state and in Katsina state too, where the protest was held. They used teargas to disperse our members.”
