Senator Orji Uzor Kalu had filed a motion for bail before a Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking release from the Ikoyi Correctional Service, pending Appeal against his conviction.
The former Abia State Governor was tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for 12 years (2007-2019) on charges bordering on fraud, money laundering, and corrupt enrichment.
He was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment on Dec. 5 by Justice Mohammed Idris who though elevated to the Appellate court, continued and completed trial of Kalu.
Kalu was charged alongside his former commissioner for finance Jones Ude Udeogo and Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited.
While Udeogo bagged 10 years imprisonment, the court ordered that the company Slok Nigeria Limited, be wound up and its assets forfeited to the Federal Government. Kalu’s bail application is pending before Justice Mohammed Liman .
The court is, however, yet to commence sitting.
