The presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi has lambasted the anti-graft agency, EFCC for not going after public office holders that stole billions.
Obi who described the acts as shameful said, it has to stop. Adding that while Public office holders who stole billions get away by bail, the youths are being arrested for owning a Laptop.
“A public officer steals N80 billion and you give him bail. Some boys carrying laptop you arrest them for fraud, what kind of country is that? Things must change”, Obi said while chatting with some Nigerians aboard flight to undisclosed destination.
Obi was reacting following the arrest of the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris, over an alleged N80 billion fraud.
Idris was arrested in May by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC.
Spokesman of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, in a statement said Idris was arrested after allegedly failing to honour the commission’s invitations to respond to issues connected to the fraudulent act.
“Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday, May 16, 2022, arrested serving Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris, in connection with diversion of funds and money laundering activities to the tune of N80 billion,” Uwujaren’s statement read.
Meanwhile, Justice Adeyemi Ajayi of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on Friday, July 22nd, 2022 – remanded Idris, and two others in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kuje.
Justice Ajayi ordered that Idris and his co-defendants be kept in Kuje Correctional pending the hearing of their bail applications on July 27.
The other defendants were Godfrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Ltd.
The defendants are being prosecuted on a 14-count charge of stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109, 485,572,691.9.
