UPDATED: 6 People Killed, Many trapped as Truck ram Into a Market In Aba (Photos)

Tragedy struck early Thursday, 3rd February, 2022 at Ogbor-hill axis Aba as Truck conveying 40ft container rammed into Ahia-udele  popularly known as (water-side market).

An eyewitness told AbaCityBlog that the truck loses its brake, adding that the driver while controlling it rammed the truck into Ahia-udele market, killing about six people, made up of traders and tricycle operators.

The eyewitness added that it happened so fast and traders were already in the market, when the tragedy struck.

” Ahia-udele is a popular abattoir market, hotels and restaurants operators always come here every morning to buy meat”.

“What happened here today is a tragedy, we’ve counted about ten bodies, while many still trapped below the vehicle, what caused the accident is still a mystery”.

Meanwhile, official reports obtained by AbaCityBlog revealed that six people were killed in the accident not ten as earlier reported by this platform.

Although, several were injured and admitted to nearby hospital in the area. A tricycle operator (Keke Napep) who survived the accident said he saw the truck approaching with speed and he has to left his Keke and fled, however, the truck crushed his Tricycle and he sustained injuries in his hands and leg.

Reacting to the incident, governor Okezie Ikpeazu led Abia government ordered total shutdown of the abattoir and Ahia-udele. The governor gave the directives through the commissioner for trade and investment, Chief Okiyi Kalu.

The governor, in a statement signed by the commissioner for trade and investment, directed traders in ahia-udele to relocate to Good Morning Market.

“Following the sad and shocking incident of a loaded trailer losing control and falling into the abattoir located at Waterside River area of Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia State, the Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has directed the immediate closure of the abattoir/cattle market and the proximal Ahia Udele market.

“While we mourn with those who lost loved ones in the unfortunate incident which occurred earlier today, it is important to state that the Ministry of Trade and Investment had long commenced processes to relocate the markets in line with public health advice received from the Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies. This gave rise to the acceleration of processes for the completion of the new abattoir which should be ready later this month,” the statement partly read.
