The Nzuko Ohaneze Ndi Ukwa/Ngwa, the apex sociocultural group of the old Aba Political Bloc of Abia State, has condemned the unclarified controversy surrounding the cause of the death of Dr. Solomon Ogunji, the immediate past Abia Commissioner for Environment.
The group frowned at the treatment melted against the family of late Dr. Solomon Ogunji, by the state Inter-Ministerial Committee on Coronavirus and accused the committee of wrongfully linking his death to COVID-19 without proper test.
It will be recalled that Abia State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi-Kalu who is also a member of the COVID-19 Committee, issued a statement on 24th of May, 2020 that Dr. Ogunji died on the 23rd of May , 2020 of high blood pressure related cases.
Okiyi-Kalu in another release on Sunday, 31st May, 2020, said that Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu has urged all those who recently came in contact with late Dr. Ogunji to go for COVID-19 test and isolate themselves.
The group in a statement issued by its National President, Barr. Saint Moses Ogbonna, said the committee summersaulted when they declared that the Ukwa East LGA born Ogunji died of COVID-19 without any test to show for their claims.
Ogbonna said the committee “wickedly detained the bereaved wife who ought to be mourning the husband and Mr. Ikokwu, one of Dr. Ogunji’s PAs at Amachara Isolation Centre to justify their evil plan against Ukwa Ngwa land. We cannot keep quiet as a people and watch the Ukwa/Ngwa political unity be destroyed using COVID-19 as a weapon. We smell a rat.”
He added that after the group critically reviewed the activities of the Abia Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19, they are dissatisfied with their conduct and are in doubt as to their sincerity.
“It has come to the notice of the Nzuko Ohaneze Ndi Ukwa/Ngwa with dismay the recent declaration of Aba, the economic nerve centre of Nigeria as the epicenter of COVID-19 by the Chris Ezem led COVID-19 Committee.
“First the committee made the first Summersault when they declared that the late Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Solomon Ogunji died of COVID-19 and without any test or symptoms.
“They claimed to have gone into contact tracing of the Ogunjis and only succeeded in inviting only the son and the elder brother and no other.
“When the family of Late Ogunji and Nzuko Ohaneze Ukwa/Ngwa began enquiry, they quickly released the wife and declared Gov. Ikpeazu and aids COVID-19 patients to raise the level of fear in the people and then shut down the government house.
“It is a brazen facts that all the aids of the Governor mentioned as carriers and those of late Ogunji are free from COVID-19 and are moving freely. It is also a fact that all the COVID-19 Taskforce Volunteers have ran away for fear of contracting coronavirus.
“After the initial lockdown, the committee now relaxed the lockdown and declared Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as market days for human beings and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays as market days for coronavirus thereby forcing everybody to stay at home on those days consequently resulting to heavy human traffic on the human market days,” he said.
Ogbonna condemned plans by the committee to introduce another total lockdown in the state. He demanded that the committee allow them visit all the facilities claimed to be on ground for COVID-19 and make available the list of all those tagged as carriers of the virus in Aba.
“The Commissioner of Information informed me that the COVID-19 Committee is planning another total lockdown and we are totally opposed to it as we believe there is no reason for it.
“We therefore demand as citizens of Abia State to visit all the facilities that the COVID-19 Committee claim to have. We also demand to see the list off all the claimed carriers in Aba to justify the tag as epicenter for COVID-19.”
