Popular Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo have declared support to the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi for President 2023.
The actor made the disclosure yesterday, when he appeared on Arise TV programme.
AbaCityBlog reports that Kenneth Okonkwo, actor, legal practitioner cum politician, had exited the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, a few days ago.
Okonkwo in a letter dated 11th July 2022, said his resignation is based on the decision of the APC presidential candidate choice of running mate, which according to him, goes against what the party stands for.
Recall that the APC presidential candidate, Ahmed Bola Tinubu a Muslim from the south has chosen the former Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima also a Muslim from the North as his running mate in the forthcoming presidential election.
Reacting, the actor in the letter, said such action will permanently destroy the political viability of Northern Christians in Nigeria, if allowed to stand.
However, speaking on Arise TV, Okonkwo said before coming to the programme, a Northern friend of his, told him to support Peter Obi of Labour Party’s candidacy.
He said, “I was in APC all this while, I did everything and I erected the secretariat of APC in my ward and my local government.
“APC have done nothing for me personally. Have you ever see me complain? I’m not going to complain”.
When asked what party he will be moving into since he quits the APC, the ace actor said he is not contemplating of any party.
“I’m not contemplating of any party now, but I must tell you, a friend of mine, a Northern brother of mine from Kano State, when he learnt I was coming to this programme, he told me that I must be Obi-centric’… Going forward.
Reacting to APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu’s comment that Northern Muslim will not vote for Northern Christian, Okonkwo said such statement is a fallacy.
“This is a Northern Muslim talking…. Okonkwo said, quoting his Northern friend. “Anybody telling you that Northern Muslims will not support Christians, is telling you false statement and that is the problem of bring Octogenarian to manage your party and to mange the affairs of the government.
When asked if he has joined the Peter Obi’s support group known as #Obidients, Okonkwo said: “I’m Obi-centric but I have not join any political party.”
