The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has fired 850 workers, many of them from refineries, amidst the coronavirus pandemic, according to Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
This was disclosed by the oil union’s General secretary Lumumba Okugbawa, in a phone conversation with Reuters on Tuesday.
The affected staff included both skilled and unskilled contractors, including technicians who helped maintain Nigeria’s oil refineries.
The oil firm is yet to comment as at the time of filing this report.
