The 82 Division of Nigerian Army, has reacted to the death of an Okada rider, Mr. Chimaobi Nwaogu, who was allegedly killed by soldiers stationed in the Ogborhill axis of Aba for failing to give #100.00 naira bribe.
ABACITYBLOG reported that the death of Uzoukwa, caused unrest yesterday in Ogbor Hill as Motorcyclists took to the streets, protesting over the killing of one of their own.
Reacting, through a statement by Deputy Director Army Public Relations 82 Division, Aliyu Yusuf, the army debunked the news, alleged the killing was perpetrated by unknown gunmen in military camouflage.
It also noted that it is pertinent to state that the rumours trending in the social media that the man was killed by a soldier for refusing to give a bribe of #100.00 naira is false untrue and misleading.
The full statement reads below…
The attention of 82 Division Nigerian Army has been drawn to a violent incident involving an individual identified as MR CHIMOBI NNAORGU who allegedly lost his life from a gun shot injury inflicted on him by unknown gunmen suspected to be a cultist in camouflage T.SHIRT at UMUOKERE NGWA COMMUNITY IN OBINGWA LGA OF ABIA STATE on Wednesday 7 AUGUST 2019.
This incident resulted in a breakdown of law and order as youths in the community took law into their hands by burning down houses. Troops of 144 Battalion with the assistance of other security agencies have calm down the situation.
I wish to state categorically that 82 Division troops deployed for any operation do not brutalised law abiding innocent citizens in line with Nigerian Army code of conduct for internal security operations. It is pertinent to state that the rumours trending in the social media that the man was killed by a soldier for refusing to give a bribe of #100.00 naira is false untrue and misleading
While investigation is on going to unravel the perpetrator of this criminal act, our heartfelt prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr CHIMOBI.May God grant them the fortitude to to bear this irreparable loss.
