Nigeria’s minister of state for budget and planning, Clem Agba, has said the fire that gutted the office of the accountant-general of the federation (AGF) did not destroy any record.
This is contrary to the reactions of Nigerians that the fire which broke out on Wednesday at the Treasury House, a building housing the AGF’s office in Abuja was somehow a deliberate act.
Ohhaeze Youths, an apex body of the Igbo youths has alleged that the fire was an attempt to disrupt pending investigation into the N2trillion palliative money shared to Nigerians by the Minister of Humanitarian affairs in connection with the AGF’s office.
However, speaking with journalists after inspecting the affected offices in Abuja, the Minister, Clem Agba, said they are yet to take an inventory of what was destroyed in the fire but all the government’s financial transactions were intact.
“We have gone round the rooms and offices where the fire affected, and I am glad to report that our data Centre where all our records are kept are fully intact,” he said.
Before his statement, former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has queried why the fire would gut the AGF office hours he was asked by the National Assembly to present data on how the COVID-19 palliative money was shared.
“Explain how you distributed 2 trillion naira to the poor. We need names, how u arrived at ur database & the demographic spread”- NASS to FGN.
“We have the records. They are with the Acc. General”- MIN. OF FINANCE.
“9 hours later office of the Acc-General is engulfed by fire! – FFK wrote on Twitter.
Also reacting, former Nigerian Rapper, turn Activist, Rugged Baba, have wondered how a Government that find it hard to distribute completed Voter registration cards to Nigerians in two years, will share billions of Naira within few days.
He wrote… “A Government that cannot finish sharing over 7 million Voter Cards in two years but shared ₦5.2bn in 72 hours for poor people…
“Are we not serving a miracle working God?*

Meanwhile, Ahmed Idris, AGF, said there would be a “thorough” investigation of the incident.
“For emphasis, our data Centre is intact, no harm in any way except for the cooling system which we are now working hard to put back to operation,” Idris said.
“We are also glad there is no casualty,” he added.
