The newly elected chairman of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) FCT 1, Abuja, Mr. Wahab Shina Omoniyi has said his administration will pay attention to the capacity building of members of the branch.
Mr. Omoniyi also said that top in the priority of his leadership is the continuation of existing corporate social responsibilities of the branch as well as enhancement of efforts to help in combating financial crimes in the MDAs.
Addressing members of the branch shortly after his inauguration as the chairman on Tuesday, Mr. Omoniyi who was elected in a virtual voting exercise expressed gratitude to the immediate past exco and all members of the FCT 1, Abuja for their co-operation and support that saw to the success of the election.
“I want to give kudos to my immediate past chairman, Petu Joyce Aina and let you know that it will remain on record that you have steered the affairs of this branch to achieve this sanitised climate that we are enjoying today and that will not go unrecognised.
“I also want to tell the newly elected exco members under my leadership that we have a job on our hand. Don’t forget we have just and still experiencing COVID-19 pandemic which has affected a lot of things across the world and our branch inclusive. There is task ahead of us to continue successfully piloting the affairs of the branch where the immediate past exco stopped. There is need therefore for us to get ready” he said.
Mr. Omoniyi also expressed readiness to give special consideration to senior members of the association whom he said have remained assets to the body even after retirement. “When it comes to financial commitment in the branch, I think it is now due for you to enjoy some subsidies” he added.
He also frowned at the roles Accounting professionals play in perpetration of fraud, insisting the branch under his leadership will empower members with pre-requisite skills to tackling the menace.
“There is no corruption that happens without the involvement of an accountant. As professionals, we will ensure that our members are well equipped with all the necessary tools to make sure they contribute meaningfully in fighting the scourge called corruption.
“By doing this, it will help the government and the nation as a whole to sustain a sanitised financial environment”, he added.
The immediate past chairman, Petu Joyce Aina thanked the electoral ad-hoc committee for the success of the virtual voting which she said is the first in the association.
According to Aina, the branch will continue to explore available opportunities to set the pace for others to follow.
The President and chairman of governing council of the association, Muhammad Akaro Mainoma who was represented by the Chairman, branches and benevolence committee Ibrahim Gidado expressed gratitude to FCT 1, Abuja branch for their maturity in conducting what he described as a rancour-free contest.
While calling on the new leadership to make efforts to carry every member along, Gidado explained that the association will continue to train members on fraud control and prevention with greater emphasis on ethics of Accounting profession.
Other elected exco members include Victoria Barde as vice chairman, Oyedele John Kehinde as the General Secretary, Doris Onuorah as the Assistant General Secretary and Caroline Etu Omonokhua as the Treasurer.
Others are Idris Said Muhammad as the Financial Secretary, Fyada Edward as Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi B. Yahaya as Ex-officio member 2 and immediate past chairman, Petu Joyce as Ex-officio member 1.
