Market Traders Association of Nigeria, MATAN, a union which is billed to partner with Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, to collect taxes from millions of Nigerians is founded by Alhaja Habibat Mogaji, the late mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
AbaCityBlog reports that President Tinubu’s government had announced the Value Added Tax Direct Initiative to enable FG to collect taxes from the informal sector.
However, a union, Market Traders Association of Nigeria, MATAN, was introduced to partner with the FIRS to collect & remit VAT from their members, especially those in the informal sector.
“A collaboration between FIRS and MATAN to promote awareness on VAT collection and remittance in the marketplace and informal sector, while simplifying VAT payment and remittance for the marketplace and informal sector using a purpose-built digital platform”, FIRS, disclosed this in a statement through its Twitter handle on Monday.
What About Market Traders Association of Nigeria, MATAN?
A quick search on Google pulled up some information. Although, in its official website (matan.ng), information about the union belonging to Tinubu’s late Mother does not exist or was deleted.
A Twitter user, @mikaelbernard shared a link from the website, and the content was glorifying Tinubu’s late Mother, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji as the commander of the union, however, the link seems to be currently being deleted from the website feed and was cached by Google.
