Welcome to Jesuit Memorial College (JMC), Port Harcourt, Nigeria. JMC is a Catholic co-educational boarding secondary school. Owned and run by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), it is open to all irrespective of religion, ethnicity, nationality or race.
Its vision and mission are founded on the writings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.
JMC was founded in October 2013 in memory of 60 students of Loyola Jesuit College (LJC), Abuja, Nigeria who died in Sosoliso plane crash of 10 December 2005.
JMC provides a well-rounded education in terms of conscience, competence, compassion, and commitment. At graduation at the end of Senior Secondary 3 (SS 3) – that is, Grade 12 – we expect our students to be open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious and committed to promoting justice.
We admit students into Junior Secondary 1 (JS 1) – that is, Grade 7 – only. That way, at graduation, they will have spent six years in the school. Our entrance examination holds on the second Saturday of February every year.
Candidates should be in Primary 6 – that is, Grade 6 – and turn 11 years, at least, in age in the year of admission. They are tested in English Language and Mathematics. The examination is based on the curricula developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) for Basic 4-6.
JMC has examination centres in several cities in Nigeria and abroad. We offer admission to all candidates who meet our admission criteria for the year.
Religion, ethnicity, nationality, race and gender are not factors in our admission process.
Education at JMC is of a high standard. The relatively few students who make it through our thorough admission process (we admit about 100 students out of about 1000 candidates) experience with all its rigours an education that touches every aspect of their lives: intellectual, moral, religious, physical, and so on.
Our education is demanding not only on the students but also on the staff, management and parents of students. We eliminate or, at least, bring to a minimum anything that is likely to get in the way of the education of any of our students. Eliminating or reducing potentially negative elements in this way means asking everyone involved to make sacrifices, some of which are quite painful but certainly bearable.
For instance, as soon as school resumes, we do not allow students to go home until it is time for a holiday: Christmas holiday, Easter holiday and long holiday in July. This means that JMC students participate in out-of-school engagements (visa processes, anniversaries, routine medical care, etc.) during holiday only. The policy guarantees that no student misses any aspect of the holistic education we provide.
If what you want for your child is a world-class secondary education, then you are right to consider JMC.
