Abia State Government says it will deploy Environmental Health and Sanitation Court Officers across all the LGA jurisdictions in the state to monitor those who block the drainages.

Newsbuka.com quoted the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment Iheanyi Ubani as stated this through the State Director Pollution Control and Environmental Health Ministry of Environment, Mr Ikechukwu Ukaegbu shortly after monitoring the month of August sanitation exercise in Umuahia, cautioned Abians to desist from blocking the drainages with household refuse.

He decried that such illegal/unapproved act exposes the state to flood and it has been predicted that Abia is among the states to experience flooding this year.

Mr Ubani pointed out that the activities of those who block the drains with household waste, have started causing flooding in the state, warning them to refrain from their activities before it is late.

On plans to avert flooding in the state, the Environment Perm. Sec. said the Abia State government had begun massive desilting of drainages to avert further danger.

He said it will be done simultaneously with the monthly sanitation exercise, adding that from Monday next week, the Ministry and the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), will partner to desilt streets in Aba, down to Umuahia, Ohafia and other places in the State, informing that this will also go in tandem with enlightenment progremmes.

He enjoined to embrace the monthly sanitation exercise and avoid viewing it as the obligation of the state government alone.

Mr. Ubani reminded Abians that environmental sanitation and personal hygiene complements each other, stressing that the benefits of cleanliness are impactful on the individual down to the entire society.
