A twitter user, @drpenking has narrated how a friend of his was denied VISA to Australia over a post she published about Homosexuality 3 years ago.
Penking said it’s really sad following the fact that his doctor friend has been working and praying to get the scholarships to study her ‘Masters in Public Health’ in Australia, but after her dreams came through, she was denied VISA over a social media post.
The twitter user also cautioned other Nigerian social media users who have plans to travel out of the country to be mindful of what they share online, because Embassies now go through applicants/immigrants social media user accounts before granting their applications.
According to him, his friend VISA application was denied with the term that she is ‘Homophobic.’
He wrote;
“If you have Japa plans be mindful of what you tweet o. Today, they denied my Doctor friend VISA to Australia for a scholarship she won for Masters in Public Health because of a thread she made about Homsexuality 3 years ago (August 23, 2017). They said she is homophobic. Christ!
“The tweet was not even hateful. She was just outlining dangers of homosexuality and warning people against it. They termed it Homophobia. She spent over 3 years working for this scholarship. Where will she even start from? Haaah! Jesus Christ ooi!
In Nigeria, practicing homosexuality is a crime, the law which was passed in 2014 by the then President Goodluck Jonathan read that anyone caught in the act will be jailed for 14 years.
The law punishes consensual homosexual conduct with up to 14 years in prison for men and women. Same-sex sexual relations are referred to as ‘against the order of nature’ and ‘acts of gross indecency’.
Following the passage of the law, many Nigerian Christians have campaigned against the practice of Homosexual and Lesbianism.
In social media, lots of people has continued to air their view while condemning the acts and its alleged implications.
