Following the multifaceted impacts of the lockdown order which was endorsed and aimed at breaking the cycle of spread of the Covid-19 pandemic that has ravaged the global and national economies not leaving out States and Local communities in this regard in Nigeria.
‘Initiative For Ideal Development And Emancipatory Leadership In Nigeria’ (IDEAL-NIGERIA), has appealed to the STATE LANDLORD ASSOCIATIONS in the 5 States in the South East to give out 4 (four months) to 6 (six months) free rents, in this year 2020 to their tenants as their own contribution of palliative to the people of South East and by extension Nigerians in general.
IDEAL-NIGERIA, in a press statement signed by its Executive Director, Pastor Nwokocha Anozie Innocent, said they have extended the appeal to the 5 State governments in the South East to collaborate effectively with the landlord associations and aid the implementation of this noble objective via contributing their quota in this regard.
“Our appeal is sequel to the fact that other countries in Africa such as Ghana, Rwanda, Botswana, Guinea, Uganda as well as Nigeria etc have adopted all other forms of measures as a way of identifying with the people in this trying period considering that businesses and those who survive on daily income basis are the mostly affected this period”, parts of the statement reads.
The group added that it’s “Worthy of note that a South African private Estate company named NOVARE has already given 4 months free rents to her tenants in Abuja and Lagos as at Wednesday, June 3, 2020.
“It will be recalled that we have carried this passionate appeal message extensively on our daily radio programs prior to this time. Hence, we thought this a noble gesture”, IDEAL-NIGERIA said.
The full statement reads below…
“This move, we pray should be all inclusive and not a segregated one unless otherwise decided based on the strategies for it’s implementation by the Landlord Associations since we are well aware that some of the Landlords are retirees.
“We believe that in doing this, it will no doubt imprint the names of the Landlord Associations in the Southeast in gold and as having the interest of the masses at heart in this trying period.
“As we all can attest to, the private sector contribution in this period and on this basis remains key, hence the appeal to the Landlords at this point.
“It is no longer news that most people source of livelihood in this region were adversely affected by this pandemic and all of it’s appurtenance.
“We also call on the government to constructively lend her voice in this regard based on the fact that if countries like Uganda and Guinea could give such government regulations that no payment of house rents should take effect, then it is time for our governments in the Southeast to take a bold step in this regard but constructively as we began with an APPEAL.
“Honestly, with collective efforts from the government and the Landlord Associations, and as a people on this request we shall most definitely leave another plus+.
