Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has sworn-in the erstwhile deputy Chairman of Obingnwa Local Government, Mrs Uloma Nwogu as the new council Chairman.
Until her new position, Mrs Nwogu was the Deputy to the embattled Obingnwa Council Chairman, Hon. Ibe Nwoke.
AbaCityBlog reports that Hon. Nwoke had exited the state ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and joined the Young Progressive Party, YPP, in the state, in a bid to pursue his Federal House of representatives ambition.
The move by Hon Nwoke elicited protest against him by Obingnwa women and youths, who demanded him to be impeached.
Governor Ikpeazu, during the swearing in of the new council Chairman, held at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House Umuahia, said he acted following receipt of a letter dated 23rd May, 2022 written by the former Council Chairman of Obingwa, Hon Ibe Nwoke entitled: Resignation of my party membership.
The governor said Hon Nwoke, breached the provisions of Section 23, Sub -section 1(f) of the Abia State local Government Law No. 2 of 2006.
Gov Ikpeazu noted that the Law makes it imperative for a new Chairman to be sworn in to take over the reigns of power at Obingwa Local Government.
He added that the essence is to deepen democracy and involve youth and women in the governance process.
The governor congratulated the new Chairman and enjoined her to protect the interest of Obingwa and Abia State by mainstreaming the interest of women and youths.
In her acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Mrs Uloma Nwogu thanked the Governor for finding her worthy to serve and promised not to disappoint him and the state.
The oaths of office and allegiance were administered on the new Chairman by Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the ministry of Justice, Mrs Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne.
