The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development, FENRAD, has commended the thoroughness and rectitude exhibited by the Inspector General of police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, in handling the extrajudicial killing of Mr. Friday Arunsi in Ebem-Ohafia by some trigger-happy policemen.
From the IG’s release of Tuesday, 21, April 2020, signed by Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, DCP Frank Mba, FENRAD said it learned that the timely redeployment of the former Commissioner of Police, Abia state command, Mr. Okon Ene, under whose command the “unprofessional conduct and misuse of firearms” resulting to loss of life happened.
To this end has the IG directed Commissioner of Police, CP Mrs. Janet Agbede to take over command from the former as well as setting up a special investigation panel to be headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Force Criminal Investigation Department, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi, to ascertain the remote and early causes of the killing and the disturbances that trailed same in Ebem-Ohafia.
While this is the right step in the right direction, FENRAD urges the IG to, in the same way, enquire into the other killings within the state which preceded the one of Ebem-Ohafia, especially, in Ururuka of Obiomangwa LGA resulting in the death of Mr. Godwin Chibuisi and other Extra Judicial Executions in the State.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director of the Human Rights Foundation, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, said though, they appreciates these developments, but demands that justice is expeditiously served to the later and to all parties as well.
“Having stated this, FENRAD welcomes the new state commissioner of police while wishing her a peaceful regime and stay in Abia.
“Finally, FENRAD also wishes the IG’s special investigation panel success urging that due and wider consultation is done in such a manner that findings and report thereafter are seen as objective and comprehensive and Justice is seen and done
“FENRAD wants peace in Abia and any parts thereof”, the statement concluded.
