Poor Menstrual Hygiene, especially at the early stages of development has been identified as one of the major causes of infertility among many women.
Similarly, lack of adequate sex education for the youths particularly the girl child has resulted in the unfortunate ruination of their careers.
These are the high points of a one day sensitization seminar held for the students and staff of Abayi Girls Secondary School Abayi-Umuocham by a non governmental organization,Oasis Humanitarian Foundation.
Speaking at the workshop with the theme” Pad the Girl Child” CEO of Oasis Foundation Mrs Gift Chiamaka Ogbonna decried the high rate of poor and unproductive life of many women today, noting that the ugly trend is partly traceable to the inability of many women to maintain and or observe a healthy and hygienic menstrual circle when growing up.
According to her, many women who are today battling with infertility in their marriages may have ignorantly and or as a result of deprivation resorted to the use of unhealthy methods such as the use of tissue papers and other unorthodox means during their menstrual circle observation especially in the early stages of their lives.
Shading more light on this, one of the resource persons, Dr Sam Odachi, a consultant gynaecologist noted that in the course of using some unhygienic and or unorthodox means in controlling menstrual circles, most women are exposed to the high risk of contracting various infections which if not diagnosed and treated early enough ,may result in many complications which may include infertility.
Mrs Ogbonna, the CEO of Oasis Foundation said it is against the backdrop of this gloomy scenario which has led to many broken marriages that goaded her into taking up the task of educating the girl child on the need to maintain a healthy menstrual circle observation.
She also appealed for sex education to be accorded prominence in our school curriculum. This according to her will stem the tide of unprotected sex, and Unwanted pregnancies among our youths.
“The career and general life expectations of our youths today mostly the girl child have been truncated and ruined by unwanted pregnancies resulting from lack of adequate sex education.
“This is the main reason we are undertaking this mission to create awareness among our youths .Iam calling on all good spirited persons, non governmental organizations and the government to join hands in this campaign.” Mrs Ogbonna stated.
Mrs Onwunna Benedine, the Principal of the school (Senior Cadre) appreciated Oasis Foundation for choosing Abayi Girls Secondary School as one of the places for the workshop, promising that they will put in to proper use lessons learnt. Free sanitary pads were distributed to the staff and students.
