The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has been heavily criticised over his claims that two million dollars and 17 million Naira cash were looted from his palace in the aftermath of the EndSARS protest.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Glover Hall Memorial in Lagos on Wednesday, he said “Many buildings were burnt, including vehicles used to generate income.
I can now say publicly that they stole $2 million and N17 million from my palace.”
The monarch’s claim has been greeted with outrage. Some Nigerians wondered why he had that amount of money in cash in his palace. Others expressed concern that he had that amount of money where many of his subjects were struggling to eat.
Twitter user, Uncle Ajala said, “The Oba of Lagos says that $2 million and N17million were stolen when hoodlums attacked his palace during the last #EndSARS protest
“He should be telling EFCC what he was doing with that amount & how he got the $2m after this revelation, but this is Nigeria, even bandits dey ball.”
Prince Ayomitunde Yusuf tweeted, “This EFCC should not look away on this. The Oba of Lagos accused #EndSARS protesters of stealing $2,000,000 and #17,000,000 from his palace.
The question is why will he keep such money in his palace when the CBN has CASHLITE policy in place? How did he get such volume of cash?”
Ogbeni Jack Sparrow tweeted, “Since the Oba of Lagos cannot dead the issue of the attack on his palace during the #EndSARS protest, he’s gradually playing into the hands of “that small boy at EFCC” (according to how some elders will refer to Bawa). $2 million and #17 million in cash? That’s money “laundry” o.”
Kayode Ogundamisi tweeted, “It’s not in the culture of our people to say a King is a w*** So I will just 🤐 “You had $2 Million and N17 Million naira cash and surrounded by subjects who could hardly afford $2 meal a day?”
