Following the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, plans of releasing the new Naira Notes into circulation starting from Dec 15, 2022, a lady who claimed to be a banker has alleged that a customer deposited money in the new Notes to their branch.
The lady in the TikTok video which has gone viral on social media, alleged that a customer deposited a sum of N18 million in the new Notes, which, according to her, after counting it, the money came out to be N17 million instead.
However, in the video, the lady claimed that the money is the new notes, and one significant thing is, the cash which she claimed to be deposited by a customer are N2,000 and N5,000 naira notes.
This is contrary to CBN statement of redesigning only the N200, N500 and N1000 Naira Notes.
AbaCityBlog recalled that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, on Wednesday revealed reason behind the idea of redesigning the 200, 500, & 1000 Naira notes.
Addressing the press briefing on what birthed the idea of redesigning the Naira Notes, Emefiele said there’s significant hoarding of banknotes by members of the public, with statistics showing that over 80 percent of currency in circulation are outside the vaults of commercial banks.
He admitted that the currency management has faced several daunting challenges that have continued to grow in scale and sophistication with attendant and unintended consequences for the integrity of both the CBN and the country.
The CBN governor said they have finalized arrangements for the new currency to begin circulation from December 15, 2022.
