Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been under fire over his recent comment on why the North should vote for him rather than presidential candidates from ‘Igbo or Yoruba’ origin.
Atiku who described himself as a Fulani and a Northerner, said the North need to vote a Northerner who can serve in their interest.
Atiku said this while speaking at an interactive session with the Joint Arewa Committee on Saturday in Kaduna State.
In a trending video, the politician said, “I have traversed the whole of this country. I know the whole of this country.
“I have built bridges across the whole of this country. I think what the northerners need is someone who is from the north and also understands the other parts of Nigeria, who has built bridges across the country. This is what a northerner needs.
“We doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate.”
Northerners Don’t Need Yoruba, Igbo Candidates, Says Atiku
Reacting, Charles Oputa aka Charly Boy, the self-acclaimed President of Frustrated Nigerian Youths in a tweet on Sunday described Atiku as a disuniter, adding that Atiku’s former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo had warned against him and his presidential ambition.
He tweet: “Atiku Abubakar the great disuniter, I no know sey U bad like dis, telling our northern brothers not to support any Igbo or Yoruba candidates?
“So you’re ethnically bigoted? Shame on U Baba OBJ don warn us abt U and we hear him loud and clear. May U fail for the 10th time as usual.”
