The National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has finally reacted over the creation of the South West Security outfit codenamed “Operation Amotekun”.
Tinubu, who lambasted those that criticised him for not lending his voice, described them as adversaries.
The statement signed by him followed the criticism he has received for keeping silent. Many have called him out, while some have already tagged his silence for his 2023 presidential ambition.
Amongst those who have criticises Tinubu is Professor Farooq Kperogi. The columnist in a post he shared yesterday on twitter alleged that Tinubu was behind the declaration of the operation as illegal by the Federal Government.
SPECIAL REPORTS: How Tinubu Connived with FG declaring “Operation Amotekun” “illegal” – Farooq Kperogi
“Days b4 Amotekun was declared “illegal,” Tinubu was in d Villa. His stooge in Lagos didn’t attend d official launch of d outfit. Today, Lagos became d only SW state where an Amotekun solidarity rally was disrupted by d police. Why are pple asking Tinubu’s to speak on Amotekun?
“He has already spoken. Some silences– and actions– speak louder than words. Tinubu is more in dread of offending the cabal and missing out on his illusory 2023 presidency than he is of the wrath of his own people”, Prof Kperogi shared on twitter.
Also, Afenifere chieftains, Chief Ayo Adebanjo; and Senator Femi Okurounmu, had in a report published by The PUNCH claimed that Tinubu’s presidential ambition had beclouded his judgement on Amotekun.
Reacting over the statements, the former Lagos State governor said he could not make statements without circumspection.
He added,
“Until now, I have deliberately maintained a studied silence regarding Amotekun. Many have tried to goad my swift public reaction. Those who have taken this road did so not because they care about Amotekun or even the people it intends to help protect. They did so knowing this had become a delicate and emotional issue for many. These cynics did so with the adversarial hope that, in haste, I might misspeak or misstep in a manner they could twist to their political advantage.
“Such people are possessed of a mercenary aspect that permits them to sacrifice almost anything, even jeopardise the very foundations of our political unity, if they might exact personal gain from the upheaval.
“In that they know no nobler purpose than their own appetites, we should feel sorry for them. However, we must not allow our sympathies for their barren condition to persuade us that there is worth in their destructive misconduct. They must be left to the consequences of their own devices.
“If truly I am a political leader as I am often described, then I have not the luxury of hasty, ill-conceived utterances.”
