#EndSARS: Nigerian Police not brutal because they are poorly paid or untrained

February 13, 2021
in Uncategorized

Ayo Sogunro, scholar at Centre for Human Rights (CHR) has opined that Nigerian Police are not brutal because they are poorly paid.

Sogunro, a legal practitioner stated this following the arrest of protesters at Lekki Toll Gate Saturday morning.

Abacityblog.com has reported that protesters were arrested at Lekki Toll Gate following an order from the Federal and state government to forestall the planned protest.

Mr. Macaroni, a popular comedian was also arrested alongside other protesters who converged at the Toll gate to register their anger over the planned reopening of the Lekki toll gate following the alleged killing of protesters on October 20, 2020.

Describing the Nigerian Police force as bullies. Sogunro said even if the government decided to pay them well, they will be more brutal on the citizens whom they meant to serve.

He said; “The Nigerian police are not brutal simply because they are poorly paid or untrained. No, they are brutal because they understand that they serve the political elite and not the people.

“Pay them more money and they will simply be a highly-paid and brutal police force. #EndSARS

“The entire political system needs to be reset. Govt has to be re-thought. Principles of constitutional democracy must be practically infused into all aspects of our political system. To #EndSARS we must first end this colonially-designed and military-perfected political system.

The Nigerian police are not brutal simply because they are poorly paid or untrained. No, they are brutal because they understand that they serve the political elite and not the people.

Pay them more money and they will simply be a highly-paid and brutal police force. #EndSARS
