A member of UK Parliament, Hon. Tom Tugendhat has alleged that the former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon left Nigeria to the United Kingdom with half of Central Bank of Nigeria.
- General Yakubu Gowon, a Nigerian political and military leader served as the head of state of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975. He ruled during the deadly Nigerian/Biafra Civil War, which resulted in the death of 3 million people, most of which were civilians.
The MP for Tonbridge and Malling, Hon. Tom Tugendhat, made the revelation during debates sanction against Nigeria following Human Rights abuses and the way the Nigerian government handled the #EndSARS protest.
It should be recalled that the Nigerian government used brutal force against the #EndSARS peaceful protesters. On October 20th, 2020, the men of the Nigerian army barricaded the Lekki Tollgate where the protesters assembled and opened fire, which resulted into killings and injuring of protesters.
Although, the army has denied involvement, a stand, which they later withdrew and stated that they were at the scene to restore order.
Following the military denial, a petition was sent to the UK Parliament. Yesterday, the Parliament sat and debates on the petition which include sanctioning the Nigerian Government over its human rights abuses and corruption.
