The Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu has stated that the playground of one of the African’s most successful football champions, Enyimba FC of Aba was never an ‘International Stadium’ as being portrayed by the people.

The governor, while speaking on a radio station in Aba on ‘Politics today’ anchored by the radio presenters, told the audience that his government will do everything to give Enyimba FC a standard stadium it deserve.

When asked what his government has been doing to make sure the club which has been playing their home games away returns to their ground.

Ikpeazu said; “We are doing everything possible to bring the team back to their base and to do that, we need to stay at the standard of the name the stadium bared, because if you look at it, that stadium is not an international stadium, it’s just an accolade, but it does not fit it in anyway.

“When I took over as the governor, that was one of the first things I did, I sat down with my cabinet and think over about it, we need to give the stadium a standard look, we came to a conclusion and we were recommended to work with Moni Michele Company, because we saw and believe that they know the job and they can deliver.

“We made the first payment which is when they started the work years ago, but along the line, due to lack of funds because of the economy, we couldn’t meet up to pay the full payment, so they stopped, but thank God we have been able to pay all and they promised to deliver in 7 weeks, Ikpeazu added.

Meanwhile, Enyimba International Football Club, or simply Enyimba, is a Nigerian football (soccer) club based in the city of Aba which plays in the Nigerian Premier League. Their name means People’s Elephant in Igbo language and is also the nickname used for the city of Aba.

Founded in 1976, the club rose to prominence in the 2000’s and is considered the most successful Nigerian football club as they won two African Champions League titles, six Nigerian championships and four Federation Cups since 2001.

The club stadium which was rehabilitated as at early 2000s when Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, was the governor of Abia State, did excellently well and despite the low standard of the stadium, the club won African Champions League titles back to back.
