The rift between the former governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Martin Elechi, and his successor, Governor David Umahi seems to have no end as both parties has recently engaged themselves in a verbal war.
Recently, Special Assistant on Capital Territory to Ebonyi State Governor, Hon. Stanley Okoro lambasted Chief Elechi, describing him as a political opportunist who does not understand the tenets of democracy.
According to Okoro, the time is now for the likes of Elechi to take a back seat and allow the younger generation to take the lead in politics.
Okoro was reacting following a statements credited to Chief Elechi over his condemnation the loan secured by Governor Umahi from Africa Development Bank (ADB) and Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for the funding of development projects in the state.
Okoro pointed out that the Governor Umahi-led government has continually enjoyed the support of Ebonyians in its efforts to restore the lost glory of the state.
Speaking on Wednesday with a group of students at his Edda residence in Afikpo South LGA of Ebonyi State, he cautioned the youth to be wary of old politicians who have lost touch with current realities of life.
He said, “it is not only laughable but also unbecoming of a former governor in the person of Chief Elechi to condemn the incumbent administration’s efforts in making life meaningful for Ebonyians.
“The loan secured by Governor Umahi is for the execution of development projects in the state and it is on this premise that the funding partners agreed to work with the state government in actualizing its objective of impacting lives positively.
“The conditions attached to the loan are stringent and cannot be undermined.
“I believe Chief Elechi should know better as a former Governor, the channel of communicating with an incumbent Governor if he has any patriotic advice to offer.
“We know Chief Elechi’s antecedents and Gov. Umahi will not lose sleep over his recent decampment into the fold of the APC.
“He cannot win the election in his polling unit not to talk of delivering Ebonyi State to the APC. At the appropriate time, we shall expose the shocking deeds of the former governor”.
While calling on the leadership of the APC to be mindful of Chief Elechi’s chameleon tendencies, Okoro charged Ebonyians to remain supportive of the Gov. Umahi- led government, adding that all hands must be on deck to take Ebonyi State to enviable heights.
