The waste-to-wealth programme for South-East region, has been flagged off in Abia State by the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.
Speaking at the flag off of the programme, Onu said if the programme was properly implemented, it will strengthen the place of science, technology and innovation in the country’s search for a new beginning.
According to the minister, the programme would also help move the economy from being resource-based to knowledge-based and innovation driven for the good of all.
Onu expressed confidence that through the wealth programme and using appropriate technologies, Nigeria, will ensure that what becomes waste for one house hold, can become useful for another.
“Waste generated in one household can become a source of income for people. Science , technology and innovation will help make this possible,” he assured.
“It will help create wealth and jobs, reduce poverty, help defeat hunger and stimulate national consciousness in the power of science and technology as an important instrument for nation building.”
He assured that APC-led Government is committed to do all that is necessary in the interest of the nationa to accelerate the pace of national development anchored on the effective deployment of science and technology and innovation.
“What is being witnessed is a testimony of this resolve as we will continue to work very hard and will not rest until it helps this administration to use science to lay solid foundation of the transformation of the nation to attain the greatness that Almighty God has destined for it, he explained further.

He called on Nigerians to lend their support to the initiative as it will clean up cities, towns and villages and use the waste to produce useful products and services for the people.
Present at the flag off ceremony are the Abia state Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, who earlier expressed joy tjat Abia is the first state to witnessed this development.
Other dignitaries are the former Governor of Anambra state Mr Peter Obi, The Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, Deputy Governor of Abia state Ude Oko Chukwu, one time Deputy Governor , Chief Acho Nwakanma and and others.
