Chief Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Tuesday, gave N1m each to the five wives of policemen and officers of the Department of State Services, who lost their lives in the state.
The beneficiaries, whose husbands died at various times in the cause of duty across the state, were received by the governor at Amawbia, alongside their children and family members.
Presenting the cash donations, Obiano said the gesture would be a continuous one through which the state government would recognise and appreciate the efforts of security officers who paid the supreme price while serving the state.
He said the circumstances that led to their deaths had been noted and efforts would be made avoid a repeat of such.
He said the state government had taken over the hospital bills of a police officer who sustained bullet wounds in the cause of a security operation.
Condoling the bereaved families, Obiano urged them to take solace in the fact that their departed loved ones would be remembered for their gallantry and assured them of his administration’s continuous support.
The State Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar, commended the governor for his gesture which he described as uncommon.
Speaking on behalf others, one of the widows, Mrs Sophia Nguru, thanked Obiano for remembering them and giving them succour at a time like this, stating that God would reward the governor immeasurably.
