There is dignity in labour,  this quote seem to be far fetched here in Abia state. May 1st 2017 saw civil servants trooping to celebrate workers day.  I couldn’t help but wonder, “what were they really celebrating? “, weren’t  these the same worker’s that railed at the inability of the government to pay salaries for over 7 months?

The venue, Ibeku high school was teeming with civil servants amidst a host of top government officials and the state labour mass.

The governor,  Dr.  Okezie Ikpeazu, in his words claimed to be dissatisfied by the current situation of the average civil servant in the state. He also declared his hope for a future where the Internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state would cover the salaries of civil servants.

Recalling his earlier statement that the state would generate 2.5 billion naira from internal revenue,  I couldn’t help but wonder, “are the workers going to remain unpaid till then? The turn up of jubilating civil servants was rather unbelievable. I wondered if their claim of not being paid was untrue or exaggerated.

Teachers no longer turn up for classes. Even if they come they barely teach.  I think this is the major reason for the low intellectual capabilities of Abia students.  Abia state is allegedly rated best in WASSCE. One cannot help but wonder, how?

What magic do these allegedly unpaid teachers perform to outdo other states. Just when I thought civil servants would match protesting to the government house,  they were seen jubilating.

The trend of owing civil servants is unbecoming in Nigeria, and Abia have no reasons to be enlisted among other states that owes their worker’s salary, going through our state IGR, Abia supposed to be an exception.

But where are we today?
