10th NASS: Why South East Deserve Senate Presidency

April 1, 2023

  • By Chief M.O.Ude

Nigeria since 1999 has been operating a type of zoning system between the North and the South. They therefore, brought six posts that should go to each zone for peace in Nigeria.

In other words, the president, the vice, the senate president, the deputy, the speaker, the deputy are usually shared amongst the six political zones.

Accordingly, the North West has had 2 presidents, one vice president and one speaker.

The North East had got two vice presidents, one senate president.

The South West had two presidents, one vice president and two speakers. The North Central had two senate presidents, one deputy speaker and two chairmen of ruling political parties.

The South South had one president, one vice president, chairman of a ruling party.

The South East has only produced, four senate presidents and one deputy speaker.

From the above it is only the South East and North Central that are yet to produce the president or vice president.

Infact the last election was the turn of the South East to produce the president. Unfortunately, the PDP refused to zone the presidency to the zone despite calls by well meaning Nigerians to do so. Atiku’s ambition to be president at all costs made him convince the party executive to allow everyone to contest.

The result of the election now shows that if PDP had zoned it to south East, they could have got the presidency, considering the fact that both Peter Obi, Kwankwaso and Atiku were all in PDP.

Nigerians should realise that the South East remains the most cheated of all the zones. Leaving the Senate Presidency to the South East should be done to smoothen nerves of discrimination being felt in the zone.

They should be assured that they are still Nigerians.

Chief M.O.Ude (Nwoke maa ka esi asu oyibo).
